A Foretaste!

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm. Ephesians 6:12

Throughout my life, I have thrown many parties: themed birthday parties for my children, a surprise party at the beach with friends for my husband’s 40th birthday, and a huge surprise party with a seated dinner and wedding cake for my parents’ 50th anniversary. When the time rolled around for my 60th birthday, I decided it was my turn for a party, so my husband and my daughter got busy with the details.

The party was outside on one of the most beautiful fall nights that we have had. Family and friends came from all my different circles. Everyone seemed so delighted and joy filled that night. Honestly, I could hardly take it all in. As I tried to process the fullness of that night in my heart and soul, I remembered the words from one of my favorite books, Every Moment Holy.

The book says “to gather joyfully is indeed a serious affair. To celebrate is an act of war where we declare that evil, death, suffering, sorrow, and loss will not have the final word. The act of the joy of fellowship, the welcome and comfort of friends, and the celebration of the blessings of food and drink, conversation and laughter are the true evidences of things eternal—a foretaste of His eternal kingdom.” That night was a foretaste for me.

It is time to declare war on evil, sadness, difficulties, fractured relationships, and stress. Come up for air, celebrate and say “Thank you, Lord” for all the good things around us.

For Reflection

What is something big or small that you could celebrate this week?
Whom could you invite to celebrate with you?

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, it has been an exhausting, emotional, and stressful couple of years. Thank you for walking through it with me. Help me to lift up my eyes to see you, and your kingdom around me. Help me to see what is worth celebrating today. AMEN
