Meditate on Scipture
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.” Psalm 1:1-3
Psalm 1 is a wisdom Psalm that paints a picture of the life God blesses—a life grounded in His Word. It encourages us to delight in and meditate on God’s word, promising that this practice leads to a fruitful life with unwavering stability, much like a tree firmly rooted by a stream of water.
But what does it mean to meditate on God’s Word, especially in the midst of our busy, modern lives? To meditate is to focus the mind, reflect deeply, and consider thoughtfully. It’s not just about reading scripture; it’s about experiencing God through it. As Richard Rohr puts it, “Knowing God, not knowing more, is the goal.”
Meditation on scripture invites us to encounter God personally. A number of years ago, I was introduced to a new way of reading scripture that helped me to listen to God and his word(s) for me. Here’s a simple guide to help you personally connect with Him through His Word:
A Guide to Meditating on Scripture
Prepare Your Heart
Find a quiet space where you can be free from distractions.
Take a few deep breaths to still your mind and focus your thoughts on God.
Read & Reflect
Read today’s scripture aloud, slowly and thoughtfully.
Linger over the words. What word or phrase stands out to you?
Read & Listen
Read the passage a second time.
As you do, ask: What might God be saying to me through these words?
Engage in Conversation with God
On your third reading, talk with God about what you’re feeling and thinking.
Share your thoughts, ask questions, and listen for His response.
Respond & Carry It With You
Read the passage one last time, asking God: What are You trying to show me today?
Take what you’ve received into your day. Let God’s Word guide your thoughts, actions, and interactions with others.
As you continue meditating on the scripture in the weeks ahead, let these steps help you deepen your relationship with God, allowing His Word to nourish and sustain you. May this guide help you grow in your walk with God, experiencing the blessings of a life rooted in His Word.
